Large Group Birthday Dinner at Milpitas Buffet: Reservations and Tips

Milpitas Buffet is a common pick for big birthday dinners because nobody has to agree on a menu and the room is already loud. Birthday songs play over the speakers with the guest's name announced. The parts that need planning are seating a big group on a weekend night, the birthday meal rules, and the bill.

Can you reserve a table?

Possibly, but call to confirm, because listings disagree. Tripadvisor and Groupon both list the restaurant as taking reservations, and Groupon says large parties are always welcome. Diners, on the other hand, describe a walk-in room with a line on busy nights. The safe approach is to call (408) 945-8888 a few days ahead, give your headcount and arrival time, and ask whether they can hold tables for you.

On busy nights the host stand runs a paper number list rather than handing out buzzers, and a big table can wait 30 minutes or more on a weekend evening. Calling ahead does not skip that list, but it gives staff time to plan where your group will sit.

Group sizeWhat we suggest
Up to 6Walk in, or call the same day on weekends
7 to 12Call a few days ahead with headcount and time
13 and upCall about a week ahead; ask about seating together
Any size on a holidayCall early; holidays are the busiest days

These are our planning suggestions, not posted policy. The restaurant does not publish a minimum headcount, deposit or cancellation rule online, so ask about all three when you call.

Private room or main floor?

Groupon's listing mentions a private room for events, but diners mostly describe big groups seated at joined tables in the main dining room. If a separate space matters for speeches or cake, ask directly when you book rather than assuming one is free.

The birthday meal and cake

Several diners report that the birthday guest eats free. The fine print is not published: whether it needs a minimum number of paying guests, whether it applies at dinner and on weekends, and what proof of date is accepted. Bring ID and mention the birthday when you call. Our kids, senior and birthday pricing guide covers what we could confirm.

  • Ask if you can bring an outside cake and whether there is a cake-cutting fee.
  • Ask if candles are allowed and whether staff can bring plates and a knife.
  • Ask about balloons or decorations before you bring them.

When to arrive

Weekend evenings between about 6:00 and 8:00 PM are the busiest stretch, and a 2018 Tripadvisor review described a line that moves fast but still forms. For a big group, waiting for enough tables to free up together takes longer than for a couple. Arriving around 5:00 to 5:30 PM is the easiest fix. The hours guide covers the quieter windows.

The 2-hour limit

A June 2024 Tripadvisor reviewer noted a posted 2-hour dining limit. For a birthday with speeches and cake, that matters. Start eating soon after you sit down and keep the cake for the last half hour.

Planning the bill

ItemWhat to expect
Group rateNone reported; each guest pays the per-person price
Kids and seniorsDiscounted by age; 10% senior discount reported
Service chargeDiners report none added automatically; ask for large groups
DrinksBilled separately
Birthday guestFree meal reported; confirm the rules

Decide before you arrive whether one person pays or the group splits. Splitting a 15-person bill at the register during a dinner rush is slow. Adult rates are in the price per person guide.

Celebrating at home instead? The party trays and catering guide lists every tray price.

Quick answers

How far ahead should I call for 15 people on a Saturday?
About a week ahead is a safe planning window. Ask whether tables can be held for your arrival time.
Is a gratuity added for large parties?
Diners report no automatic service charge. Ask when you book, since policies for big groups can differ.
Can we bring balloons and decorations?
This is not posted online. Ask when you call.
What if fewer people show up?
Since each guest pays individually, a smaller group simply pays less. Let the restaurant know if your headcount changes.
